1. TERHUNE MEMORIAL PARK – SUNNYBANK

The land for this 10-acre preserve was donated by writer Albert Payson Terhune, who formerly used it to breed collies in the company of his wife and who wrote several books on the premises. Here, you can relax under centenary oaks while watching the sunset over Pompton Lake. The park is dog-friendly and serene, and fishing in the lake is allowed. You can also pack a picnic basket and enjoy lunch beneath the shade of the majestic trees.

2. VAN RIPER-HOPPER HOUSE

Built in 1762, the Van Riper house is one of the oldest buildings in New Jersey and was converted into a museum in 1964. The style of the home is known as “Dutch Colonial,” which has six fireplaces and was built in three stages. Here, you can find the Albert Payson Terhune Collection and experience a glimpse of life during the 18th century’s agricultural society. Touring the property is reservation-only, and the site is open year-round.

3. DEY MANSION

Dey Mansion was built during the late 18th century as the home of Theunis and Hester Dey. General George Washington used the house as his headquarters during the summer and fall of 1780 when Theunis Dey served as colonel of the Bergen County Militia. Documents attesting to Dey Mansion’s relevance to the American Revolution are now safeguarded at the Library of Congress.
Guided tours of the mansion are available from Wednesday to Sunday and last around one hour.

4. LAMBERT CASTLE MUSEUM

Lambert Castle is a New Jersey Landmark built by English immigrant Catholina Lambert between 1892 and 1893. After Lambert died in 1923, the Castle was acquired by the city of Paterson and became a tuberculosis hospital until the Passaic County Historical Society turned it into a museum in 1934.
Today, the museum hosts several permanent exhibitions. The first floor depicts the life of Catholina Lambert, showcasing many of his original possessions. In contrast, the second and third floors host a folk art gallery, a portrait gallery, and a local history gallery.

5. RINGWOOD STATE PARK

Sixteen miles away from Wayne, you’ll find Ringwood State Park, a massive 4444-acre park nestled between the Ramapo mountains. Here, you can enjoy the great outdoors at the biking and hiking trails, spend some time boating or kayaking at Shepard Lake, or tour Ringwood and Skyland Manors.

Ringwood State Park is also home to the State Botanical Garden.
